Patients tell me they’re stirring it into their morning coffee, adding it to smoothies, and trying the latest “glow from within” powders they see online. If you’ve ever wondered, “What even is collagen?” and “will it actually help my wrinkles or joint pain?” — you’re not alone. In this blog, we’ll look at what collagen is and where it comes from, what “hydrolyzed collagen” actually means, what the science says for joints, skin, gut health, and muscle, how collagen compares with whey protein, and how to decide if collagen fits into your functional medicine plan.

What Is Collagen?

Collagen is one of the most abundant proteins in your body. Think of it as your internal scaffolding: it gives structure, firmness, and resilience to your skin, bones, tendons and ligaments, cartilage, blood vessels, and other connective tissues. Because collagen is so central to structure and repair, it has become a major focus in supplements, especially for healthy aging, joint support, and tissue healing. Where Does Collagen Come From?

Dietary and supplemental collagen usually comes from animal connective tissues, including fish skin and scales (marine collagen), pork skin, chicken cartilage, cow hides and bones, bone broth, and egg white proteins that help support collagen synthesis. Gelatin (like the kind used in Jell-O) is simply cooked collagen and has been used traditionally for joint and digestive support. Modern collagen supplements are a more refined and convenient version of these older remedies.

What Does “Hydrolyzed Collagen” Mean?

Most collagen powders are labeled “hydrolyzed collagen” or “collagen peptides.” Hydrolyzed means the long collagen chains have been broken into smaller pieces (peptides), which helps collagen dissolve easily in liquids and makes it easier for your body to digest and absorb.

In most studies, people take about 5–10 grams of collagen powder per day for a few months. There’s also a special joint-focused form called undenatured type II collagen (UC-II), which is usually taken at a very small dose of 40 mg per day, sometimes a bit higher in combination products. These doses have generally been shown to be safe and may offer modest pain relief, especially for knee osteoarthritis when used consistently over time.

Collagen is not a cure for osteoarthritis, but it can be a helpful add-on that may reduce joint pain over time—especially when paired with movement, strength training, weight management, and an anti-inflammatory way of eating.

Collagen for Skin Hydration, Elasticity, and Wrinkle Support

When it comes to skin, this is where collagen has some of the best research behind it. Studies using oral collagen (usually around 2.5–10 grams per day for 8–12 weeks) show that it can help improve skin hydration, support elasticity (that “bouncy” feel), and soften fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes. Some research also suggests that collagen may support the deeper layers of the skin, not just how it looks on the surface.

Larger reviews of many studies together have found that people taking collagen generally have better skin hydration and elasticity than those taking a placebo. Dermatology reviews also tend to agree that oral collagen is likely to help with skin smoothness, hydration, and firmness, and that it’s usually well tolerated. Individual trials using specific collagen products (including marine and bovine sources) have shown small reductions in wrinkle depth and improved elasticity after 2–3 months of consistent use. Some of these benefits may even last for a few weeks after stopping the supplement. Overall, the changes are gradual and subtle—more like “my skin looks smoother and less dry” than a dramatic, filler-like transformation.

For skin, collagen is best thought of as a slow, supportive boost. Over 2–3 months, it can modestly improve hydration, elasticity, and fine lines—but it does not replace sunscreen, good sleep, stress management, or a nutrient-dense diet.

Collagen for Gut Health—What We Know and What We Don’t

You may have seen collagen advertised as something that will “heal leaky gut” or “fix dysbiosis,” but right now the research doesn’t fully back that up. A few animal studies suggest collagen might shift gut bacteria in a positive way, but good human studies looking at the microbiome, gut lining, and symptoms are still very limited. Most gut claims are based on theory and collagen’s general role in connective tissue, not solid clinical proof in people.

Collagen might offer gentle, general support for gut health, but it has not been proven to fix dysbiosis or specific gut conditions. It can be a nice extra, but it should not replace the core pieces of a gut-healing plan (nutrition, fiber, stress, sleep, targeted treatment, etc.).

Collagen for Muscle, Recovery, and Strength

When we talk about building or maintaining muscle, we’re really talking about muscle protein synthesis (MPS)—your body’s process of repairing and building new muscle tissue after you eat protein and/or do resistance exercise.

A key study in healthy older women compared collagen peptides with whey protein to see how each affected MPS. In this trial, women around 69 years old took 30 grams of collagen peptides or whey protein twice a day for six days and did leg resistance exercises so researchers could measure MPS in one leg at rest and one leg after exercise. Whey protein clearly increased MPS in both the resting and exercised leg and also boosted longer-term MPS over the full six-day period. Collagen peptides, on the other hand, did not significantly increase MPS in the resting leg, only gave a small short-term bump in the exercised leg, and did not increase longer-term MPS in either leg.

One big reason for this difference is the amino acid profile. Collagen is very low in essential amino acids—especially leucine, which is a key “on switch” for muscle building. Whey and other complete proteins are rich in leucine and the other essential amino acids, which is why they reliably stimulate MPS and are preferred for muscle health, recovery, and strength.
