As you may know, there are a lot of changes that occur in a woman’s body throughout their pregnancy. Their body must continue to adapt to the increase in hormones, circulatory changes and the postural/mechanical changes that can cause stress on the musculoskeletal system (MSK). These changes can trigger tension and, in some cases, pain.

Musculoskeletal pain is very common during pregnancy. In fact, of pregnant women, up to 90% experience back pain – generally within the low back, pelvic girdle region or both – with up to 35% classifying their pain as moderate, severe, or disabling and subsequently, affecting activities of daily living (1).

The area’s most commonly affected are the:

  • Sacrum
  • Pelvis
  • Lower back
  • Supporting network of ligaments (round ligament most importantly), tendons, muscles (iliopsoas and piriformis), and associated nerves (sciatic).

For this reason, chiropractors can be largely helpful for ensuring a more comfortable pregnancy!

Chiropractors have the expertise to treat musculoskeletal conditions and are uniquely qualified to relieve pregnancy pain and discomfort without the use of medication as well as provide holistic advice to maintain health before, during and after the baby is born.

Chiropractors will use gentle and diversified techniques to help women throughout every stage of pregnancy. Though many chiropractors are able to treat pregnant women, there are special techniques and treatments available specifically for pregnancy. Webster technique is a common technique used during your visits to the chiropractor during pregnancy.

What is the Webster Technique?

The Webster Technique is a very gentle analysis and treatment technique that addresses the low back and pelvis, associated muscles, and specific ligaments such as the round ligament and sacrotuberous ligament. It can help balance the muscles, ligaments, and bony structures of the pelvis – making it easier for the pelvic girdle to expand for an easier birth. This in turn may allow for a less restricted space for the baby within the pelvis, allowing them to go into optimal positioning, and for a smoother delivery.

Webster Technique Training involves a comprehensive course offered by International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). This course is designed for chiropractors who want to improve their skills in taking care of pregnant patients. It covers the knowledge of biomechanics associated with sacroiliac joint, adjustment techniques to enhance neuro-biomechanical function and address the concerns peculiar to the pregnant women.

Through this training, chiropractors can help in minimizing the effects of sacral subluxation and optimizing pelvic neuro-biomechanics towards safer and easier births. Basically, it is an integration between theoretical learning as well as practical hands-on training. Upon completing the programme, practitioners must sit for an examination to be certified in Webster Technique indicating that they are proficient in this unique field of chiropractic care.

Reasons to See a Chiropractor During Your Pregnancy:

  1. Pain or Discomfort: Common sources of pain during pregnancy include low back pain, hip pain, sciatic pain, pelvic pain, pubic symphysis pain, rib/mid back pain etc. During your pregnancy, your body is doing a lot of work to grow and make room for your new baby.  Know that you do not need to suffer through discomfort during pregnancy! There is a lot that can be done to determine the cause of the pain and to work towards easing it.
  1. Staying Active Throughout Your Pregnancy: Chiropractors have the ability to access and prescribe exercises. This may include modifications for your favorite exercises and activities, along with specific exercises to strengthen the core/glutes, encourage proper breathing, increase mobility and provide stability throughout the chain. Just as each body is unique, so is each pregnancy. Because of this, we will create customized exercises for you to help you throughout your pregnancy.
  1. You Have Concerns About Your Baby’s Positioning: The Webster Technique is a very gentle technique that addresses the low back, pelvis, associated muscles, and specific ligaments designed to help relax and align the pelvis. This in turn may allow for a less restricted space for the baby within the pelvis, allowing them to go into optimal positioning, and potential for a smoother delivery.
