Migraines can oftentimes be debilitating and have a significant effect on daily activities, including work. An estimated 1 in 6 Americans suffer from migraines each year. Recently, Acupuncture has become a more popular alternative treatment for the management of headaches and migraines and for good reason!

Why Choose Acupuncture Treatment for Migraines?

Acupuncture offers a holistic approach to treating migraines, rooted in both traditional wisdom and modern medical understanding. By targeting specific acupoints, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, promoting the release of neurotransmitters and endorphins that can alleviate pain and reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine episodes.

This holistic practice not only addresses the symptoms but also seeks to identify and treat underlying imbalances that may contribute to migraine triggers, such as stress, hormonal fluctuations, and poor circulation.

Acupuncture for migraines can be an effective prophylactic treatment and can also be used during an acute episode to decrease the intensity or make the migraine go away all together.

Additional Reasons for Acupuncture Treatment for Migraines:

  • Decrease pain with fewer side effects, if any at all.
  • Dedicated relaxation time.
  • Prevention for future episodes and provided sustained relief.
  • Minimizes or eliminates the need for medication.
  • Treatment can help with other symptoms that may be causing the migraine such as back pain, constipation, digestion, neck pain, and many others.

Each treatment is individualized and not a ‘one pill treats all’ type of medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at each person as a unique individual and despite having the same symptoms as another person, your treatment may be completely different and individualized to you.

What to Expect During Your Acupuncture Treatment:

  • Your acupuncturist will ask you a series of specific questions regarding your migraine, look at your tongue, and feel your pulse to determine the cause of your symptoms. Acupuncturists feel your pulse at different points on your wrists and evaluate factors like its rate, depth, and width. They also look for patterns of energy imbalance and blockages, and your overall state of Qi, or life force energy. Acupuncturists observe your tongue’s color, shape, coating, and moisture. The tongue is a key diagnostic tool because it reflects the health of your body’s systems, including digestion, elimination, fluid metabolism, and temperature regulation.

  • A thin, hair-like needle will be inserted into specific acupuncture points on the body. The treatment is essentially painless and tends to be very relaxing. The needles are retained for approximately 15-30 minutes while you rest and relax.

  • Your practitioner may make recommendations on diet and lifestyle changes that could help to prevent further episodes.

  • You can expect to see your acupuncturist once a week for a few months to start out with. As the frequency and intensity of migraines decreases, your need for treatments will also decrease.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that acupuncture can be as effective as conventional migraine treatments, offering a complementary therapy that enhances overall well-being without the side effects often associated with pharmaceuticals.

At Vida Integrative Health, we integrate acupuncture into our comprehensive migraine management plans, ensuring each patient’s unique needs and conditions are met with personalized, effective care.

“I first contacted Vida for acupuncture to help alleviate my chronic shoulder pain, but I ended up also getting care for my allergies, sinusitis and headaches.

Both the acupuncturist Deborah Maahs and the chiropractor Caedin Pettigrew are amazing! They listened to me and asked many questions, then addressed my health concerns assertively.

What I like most about Vida is their commitment to holistic care, highly recommended!”

– Talita R, Vida Kirkland

“Great location, friendly staff.

I came in to have an acupuncture session on my sore body, I arrived 5 minutes early and maybe waited 7 minutes total for my acupuncture therapist to come grab me. They were super informative and took a real personable approach to my needs. I was asked a lot of great questions about what was bothering me.

Once the session started they explained in so much detail and was super informative and put me at ease – as this was my first time having acupuncture done.

I can’t wait for my next session as I was almost 100 percent when I left. Headache went away, sinuses were clear & most of my knee pain was gone immediately”.
