Massage Therapy FAQ’s
What is massage therapy?
Massage therapy is a hands-on treatment that uses targeted pressure and movement to relieve muscle tension, reduce pain, improve circulation, and promote relaxation. It is commonly used to support physical recovery, mobility, and overall wellness.
What are the benefits of massage therapy?
Massage therapy can support both physical and mental well-being. Benefits may include:
- reduced muscle tension and pain
- decreased stress and anxiety
- improved circulation
- increased flexibility and mobility
- support for injury recovery
- improved relaxation and sleep
Regular sessions may also help prevent recurring muscle tightness.
What conditions can massage therapy help with?
Massage therapy may help relieve:
- upper back, lower back and neck pain
- muscle tightness and tension
- headaches and migraines
- sports or overuse injuries
- posture-related discomfort
- stress-related muscle tension
It is often used alongside other treatments for comprehensive care.
Does massage therapy hurt?
Massage therapy should not be painful. Some techniques, such as deep tissue work, may cause mild discomfort as tight muscles release, but pressure can be adjusted to your comfort level. Communicating with your therapist helps ensure a comfortable experience.
Do I need to remove my clothes during a massage?
You may undress to your comfort level. Many people keep undergarments on. You will be properly draped at all times, and only the area being treated will be uncovered to maintain privacy and comfort.
How often should I schedule massage therapy?
Frequency depends on individual needs and goals. Some people benefit from weekly or bi-weekly sessions when addressing pain or recovery, while monthly visits are common for maintenance and stress relief.
How will I feel after a massage?
Most people feel relaxed and less tense after a session. Mild soreness may occur for 24–48 hours as muscles release tension. Drinking water and gentle movement can help support recovery.
Is massage therapy covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by insurance plan. It is best to verify benefits with your insurance provider. You may also request a free insurance verification to better understand your coverage and any out-of-pocket costs.
If we are in network with your insurance, before we can schedule your appointment, please note that a valid referral must be on file. While your insurance plan may not require a referral for massage therapy, our clinic requires one for treatment and billing purposes. Your massage referral must be dated within six months of your appointment and issued by an MD, ND, DC, DO, PA-C, or ARNP.
