Acupuncture stimulates the vagus nerve through several pathways, but one of the most direct is through auricular (ear) acupuncture. The vagus nerve has a small superficial branch in the outer ear, the auricular branch of the vagus nerve (ABVN). Placing acupuncture needles at specific points in the ear directly stimulates this branch, sending a powerful calming signal straight to the brainstem.
One study focusing on this specific mechanism found that auricular acupuncture led to a significant heart rate reduction and an impressive increase in HRV.
